Scroll Excel – Independent Review

Since topping the list of Budget Tablets on the Gadget Show we’ve been inundated with questions and orders about the Scroll Excel. The Gadget Show put the tablet through it’s paces throughout a routine day. Since then Tim has bought a Scroll Excel himself and shared his in-depth thoughts and user experience with everyone over on the Ebuyer forum.

If you want to find out about how to set it up and the general functionality, or get ‘techie’ and talk processors and hardware functionality this is definitely worth a read. Click HERE for the full post by Tim.

Thanks to Tim for taking the time to give an honest and frank review.

Independent reviews of our Child Cameras

We last mentioned our range of cameras for monitoring children on the blog back in October. The BabyCam Car, BabyCam Nursery and KidCam all aim to give parents peace of mind in a variety of settings. It’s always good to get independent feedback on products so people can read about products in real life situations, written by a person who would actually use the product.

So since October we have been doing exactly that! Claire Louise at ‘A boy with Aspergers‘, Marianne at ‘Mari’s World‘ and Kate at ‘Celebrating Mums‘ all reviewed the KidCam within their own homes and gave honest feedback about the products.

Below are a few excerpts that may be of particular interest:

‘KidCam is truly awesome, you can use it as a baby monitoring system, put it in the car to keep an eye on them little monsters in the back seat, or even watch over them as they play in separate rooms (with its spilt screen function).’

‘What I found fantastic about KidCam was it versatility! You can take it anywhere around the home, it’s so compact & extremely light weight, yet it does all it promises and more! Another top feature was the spilt screen, meaning you can watch two children playing in different areas at the one time (one in their bedroom, another in the garden)!’

‘The system also works well as a baby monitor or when introducing a child to their own bedroom for the very first time as the KidCam is fully equipped with night-vision. Since I’ve received the KidCam, I’m able to work at my desk without the constant need to get up and find out why the children are so quite (we all know when kids are too quiet, this usually means trouble)!’

‘I love the versatility of this product, it’s rechargeable and can be taken on holidays or when staying away from home. It does mean I can get on with my ironing whilst they play in the garden which I don’t have a direct view of so this product will allow them to have a little more ‘freedom’ and me to be able to get on with the tiresome chores of housework freeing up time to spend with my girls later maybe to make some more biscuits? ‘

‘We are at the stage now where the girls will often go off to their bedroom on their own or are happy to play in the garden for a short period without me having to be there and this is marvellous for me as it means I needn’t drop what I’m doing to have to go with them. However there is always that thought at the back of my mind, will they fight? hurt themselves? Are they up to mischief? In danger? and before I know it I have stopped what I’m doing and gone to have a look just for peace of mind! Kidcam is the perfect solution, it’s like an advanced baby monitor!’

‘What we liked was how easy the thing was to set up in the first place with an instruction manual written in plain English.’

‘Overall, Kid Cam is a compact and portable system that makes keeping your children safe and supervised a breeze in the car, home or garden. We were highly impressed.’

And here are some of the highlights:
“For the price I [Suzi Perry] reckon this is pretty impressive…”

“It’s quite responsive…[and] the clarity of the screen is quite good.”

“…which was very impressive [the tablet's WiFi connectivity]…”

“I’m having quite a pleasant browsing experience here… it’s smooth and responsive”

“Colours are vibrant, nothing wrong with the sound…”

“Quite a quirky USP [The Scroll's ability to export 3D movies directly into your TV]… I’m not a massive 3D fan, but I’m really impressed by that!”

“So my friends, this is my favourite the Scroll Excel…!”

Scroll Excel / Scroll Excell on The Gadget Show, Clarification of Product Features

As we noted earlier today, our Scroll Excel product featured on this evening’s Channel 5′s The Gadget Show and came out top in their round up of budget tablets.

View the Scroll Excel Product Page

Unfortunately, a number of errors were made on the program that we would like to clarify:

1. The product is called the “Scroll Excel” not the “Scroll Excell”.

2. The product will not have access to the official Android Marketplace, contrary to what was stated on the show. The model used in filming had a working version of the Marketplace installed which will not be included on the final production model. The Scroll Excel will come with a number of other app markets installed from which most, if not all of the most popular apps can be obtained without any problems.

3. The Scroll Excel runs Android 2.3 not Android 2.1.

It’s unfortunate that, despite our best efforts (and those of our friends at The Gadget Show), these errors occurred and we apologise in advance for any confusion that was caused.

Innovative new lightweight Bike Camera launched to aid thrill seekers

Leading CCTV and surveillance vendor Storage Options, has launched an innovative new bike camera to help mountain bikers, BMX bandits and thrill seekers record their latest flicks and tricks.

BikeCam has dual functionality as a cycle specialist video camera and as a front light for a bike with its integrated bright, LED light making it perfect for commuting, mountain biking or BMXing.  Bike fans can record their commutes, favourite routes or tricks and upload them quickly and share them with their friends via its USB cable.

The product has been specifically designed for use on the move to record at a 720×480 resolution and can also be used to take still images. Its quick release mounting makes it easy to attach to either helmets or handlebars and its LED lights enable it to be used as an auxiliary light when night riding. Weighing in at a meager 85g, the rider will barely notice it as they race down hill.

Paul Evison, Storage Options Marketing Manager explains the thought process behind the new camera: “We have launched a number of exciting new camera based products this year but this one really is special as it provides bikers with a useful record of everything they do. People cycle for many different reasons – it’s cheap, it’s better for the environment and it’s great for their health. Whether people cycle for fun or a daily commute, this product is useful in both situations. For mountain bikers and BMX tricksters, we hope this new product will help them to capture those special moments and preserve them for years to come. Commuters often have a daily battle for road space with much larger vehicles than their bikes, and if anything was to occur that required a recording, BikeCam could deliver with hard evidence. ”

BikeCam comes with a free 4GB Micro SD memory card that provides enough memory to record up to one hour of biking footage. If that isn’t enough memory a user can upgrade it to a 16GB card that offers up to 4 hours of video footage. All of the material is recorded in an AVI format at a rate of 30 frames per second.

The camera’s rechargeable battery will provide power for up to five hours of recording time or ten hours of LED usage on one single charge.

Storage Options has also recently launched Road Cam for car drivers as well. This windscreen-mounted camera also includes 4Gb of storage for recording at the front of the vehicle. An in-car power adaptor and simple suction mount make recording whilst driving simple.

Paul Evison adds: “Many of us encounter examples of bad driving on almost a daily basis. But if you are unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, you could be stuck with a nasty legal dispute. Both of these new products give power back to the consumer and mean you can record what happened to you whether on your bike or in your car.”

BikeCam comes complete with built-in front LED light and rechargeable battery, helmet mounting, quick-release handlebar mount, USB cable, 4GB micro SD card, power adapter/charger and clearly-worded, comprehensive manual, written in plain English to get you up and running as quickly and easily as possible.

As with all Storage Options products, these devices are supplied with clearly-written and annotated manuals and are backed by a local-rate technical support phone line serviced by experts based in the UK. Sample videos from both the BikeCam and Road Cam are available now on the Storage Options YouTube Channel.

Storage Options launches UK’s first 3D content tablet under £200

The new Scroll Excel to appear on The Gadget Show

Storage Options, the UK-based technology brand, has launched its fastest ever tablet PC and the country’s first tablet under £200 to handle 3D content.Storage Options Scrollexcel 3

The new Scroll Excel 7” has been added to the extensive Scroll tablet range. It is packed with lots of innovative new features and priced extremely competitively, at just £129.99, making it easily the most cost effective tablet to handle 3D content on the market.

Operating on Android 2.3, the Scroll Excel has the ability to output 3D content directly to a 3D TV, or monitor, by downloading 3D content to the tablet and played back on a big screen through a mini HDMI cable. It will also output 1080p HD video content in the same manner.

The new unit boasts a Cortex A8 1 Ghz processor and 512 MB RAM with 4GB Memory built-in and the ability to expand through a micro SD Card up to 32GB, making it easily the most responsive Scroll ever produced.

With a 16-bit G-sensor, enabling the seven inch screen to rotate 360 degrees, teamed with Flash support and a capacitive touch screen, the Scroll Excel is ideal for internet browsing, social networking, E-Books, online TV and video services.

Paul Evison, marketing manager for Storage Options commented: “We are really proud of the Scroll Excel as this is easily our fastest and most responsive tablet to date. We have been listening to our customers and adding the features that they said they wanted. The user experience when internet browsing, or gaming, is really impressive and has only been seen before on far more expensive products. We also believe that this is the first tablet to market with the ability to output 3D video to a 3D TV. This additional feature should appeal to those who already have a 3D TV but aren’t sure where to get their content from. In a way the Scroll Excel bridges the gap between 3D content that’s available on the internet and actually getting it onto a 3D screen.”

Paul added: “This is now easily the fastest tablet in our range and we think people will be really excited at the opportunity to have a highly responsive 3D tablet at a price that doesn’t break the bank.”

Storage Options is launching the product in time for Christmas and the new unit has already proved extremely popular with gadget enthusiasts and will be featuring on Channel 5’s the Gadget Show on 21st November 2011.

Due to the anticipated high demand for this new product Storage Options is allowing customers to make pre-orders for the units through its website.

Storage Options has also launched the Scroll Essential 7” Tablet, for those happy with a resistive screen and a lower price of £69.99. Compatible with the latest H.246 and MKV video formats, the tablet becomes a 1080p full HD media player allowing HD content to be streamed to a TV. The Scroll Essential comes with 2GB standard memory which can be easily expanded to 32GB with a micro SD card. This unit also operates on Android 2.3 but it has an ARM11 1GHz processor with 256MB DDR2 RAM.

Both of these new tablets will come preloaded with WildTangent’s new Android Games Service which allows users to try premium games for free after watching a short video. Users will also be able to rent games for a small cost or buy any of the games they want to keep. Rental prices begin at just 15p for a 24-hour period and all rentals apply toward full game ownership.

As with all Storage Options products, these devices are supplied with clearly-written and annotated manuals and are backed by a local-rate technical support phone line serviced by experts based in the UK.

Parents Rest Easy: Innovative New Range Of Baby Monitors Launched For The Home, Garden And Car

Leading CCTV and surveillance vendor Storage Options, has launched an innovative new range of easy-use ‘Baby Cam’ monitors, giving parents much-needed reassurance that their babies or toddlers are safe and secure, whether it’s in the car, the home, or even the garden.

BabyCam Car is a specialist baby back seat monitoring system, developed to help parents avoid the potentially-dangerous need to turn around and check on their children whilst driving – a habit, which according to research,  puts them at a much higher risk of having a car accident.*

Working much like a Sat Nav, parents simply attach a compact wireless camera to the side rear window to get a clear view of their baby and to transmit a high-quality video picture to a display attached to their windscreen. The system is extremely easy to use and comes equipped with a host of useful features including night vision, a built in rechargeable battery with four hour life, as well as versatile window suction mounts.

BabyCam Nursery is designed for the home, and is equipped with wireless camera and a large 7”, full-colour companion screen allowing mums and dads to see, hear and even talk to their baby from any room across the home, giving them constant reassurance that the baby is safe and well. Either portable or wall-mounted, the monitor is extremely easy to use and set up, and is equipped with a soothing night light function.

Finally, KidCam is a two-camera system designed for older, more adventurous children, and is ideal for keeping an eye on several of the ‘little ones’ at once. Equipped with two wireless cameras and a split-screen 4.3” companion screen, KidCam allows mums and dads to see and hear their children from any room in the house and even the garden, providing constant reassurance at a range of up to 100 metres, even at night time.

Paul Evison, marketing manager for Storage Options commented: “If there’s one area parents don’t want to compromise on, it’s in the safety of their children. This innovative range of Baby Cams has been developed following feedback and research among parents, and really offers the best surveillance technologies, adapted to family needs. All products in the range are extremely cost-effective and offer exceptional performance, making them ideal for any parents wanting that added piece of mind.”

Storage Options offers a wide range of surveillance technology products for home and business use. With an aim of making the installation of surveillance equipment as simple as possible, all products are supplied with a clearly-written and annotated manual and backed by a local-rate technical support phone line serviced by experts based in the UK. • *According to a study commissioned by Esure Insurance, 31% of drivers have had an accident or near miss due to passenger distraction. According to Accident Solicitors JMW, parents travelling with children in the back are statistically at even higher risk of being distracted and causing a car accident

‘Rebirth’ of CCTV as Workplace Attitudes Change Towards Surveillance

  • Experience of crime and government cuts spark sea change in attitudes
  • Surveillance vendor brings forward growth plans”

A new report, commissioned by CCTV and surveillance vendor Storage Options[1], has revealed a seismic shift in attitudes towards the use of surveillance equipment in the workplace as experiences of high crime, the recent riots, and the impact of Government funding cuts strike home.

The study questioned hundreds of business owners  across the country into safety and security in the workplace, and despite the UK’s perceived ‘Big Brother’ surveillance culture, it seems that attitudes towards CCTV is moving towards acceptance and a common sense narrative – a trend matched by ever-increasing demand for Storage Options’ services.

Alarmingly, 44% of businesses questioned in the study admitted to being the victim of crime before, with more than a third – 36% – having been targeted more than four times. The top items stolen from the workplace emerged as computers (13%) stock or products (12%) or mobile phones (6%).

When asked what would help their staff feel safer, more than a third (36%) said a security guard, followed by CCTV (27%), coming above alarm systems (21%). And despite the majority of businesses – 65% – now having some form of CCTV system in place, almost half (45%) admitted wanting MORE security around their premises, with two fifths (40%) feeling their security set up was insufficient.

The study also revealed concerns over government spending cuts, with more than half (55%) of businesses admitting this made them feel more of a security risk, and 37% feeling this could compromise the police’s ability to do their job properly. Worryingly, the majority of people questioned – 65% – claimed they would consider some form of direct action if their business was broken into.

Paul Evison, marketing manager for Storage Options commented: “The last few years have seen a public debate around CCTV as an intrusion on civil liberties, and while in some extreme instances this could be the case, it is refreshing to see the emergence of a common sense debate. It seems that a combination of factors – from the key role CCTV played in identifying and prosecuting suspects during the UK riots, to first-hand experience of crime and public spending cuts – has caused this big shift.

“Since we entered the CCTV market in May this year, we’ve seen our growth expectations exceeded, and we’ve even brought forward plans to expand our range to capitalise on demand, as more and more businesses seem to be recognising the importance of keeping their staff safe and fostering a positive work environment. While vigilante style action may seem appealing at the time, it is definitely not the right approach. We would always recommend that business owners leave any genuine security problems to the experts or the local authorities.”

New Research Reveals Two Thirds Of Business Owners Would Take The Law Into Their Own Hands To Protect Their Company

A new report, commissioned by CCTV and surveillance vendor Storage Options, two weeks prior to the UK riots, has revealed some stunning revelations about how British business owners were feeling about the overall safety of their businesses.

When asked about safety of their companies almost two thirds of the business owners (65%) said they would actually consider taking the law into their own hands to protect their company.

Interestingly, almost half of the business owners questioned (47%) were either confident or very confident in the police to do their jobs even after the Government cutbacks. However, more than a quarter (26%) did think their businesses were at more risk of crime due to them.

Paul Evison, marketing manager for Storage Options commented: “This research was commissioned in the first week of August before the terrible events we saw spreading across the country and I think it shows how small business owners were feeling about their overall security. Although most people said they would consider protecting their companies many felt that the police were still doing a great job. I think it would be interesting to see how this research would compare with research performed today. We have seen CCTV sales grow rapidly over the last couple of years and this research found that 67% of companies already have some kind of CCTV system in their business as a deterrent, it certainly shows we are a security conscious nation.”

The research also revealed that a third of business owners (33%) felt their businesses would be more secure with a private security guard but then one in ten admitted they didn’t trust security guards.

Paul added: “It seems as a nation we want to feel properly protected but don’t trust others to do it for us. I imagine most businesses across the country have now reviewed their own security carefully to ensure they aren’t at risk.”

The research also found that almost half of all the business owners questioned (44%) had unfortunately been the victims of crime, before with more than a third (34%) stating that it had been more than on four separate occasions.

The survey of 1,000 business owners was commissioned by Storage Options in August 2011.
